Pop-up Window

DESCRIPTION ✍️

Nuuly Thrift is a thrifting marketplace where anyone can buy or sell. Recognizing that visitors often browse our site, discover items of interest, and express a desire to save these items, we view this as a valuable opportunity to extend an invitation for them to join our marketplace by registering an account. This project showcase the process of how I ideate, explore, and define a solution for the popup window on Nuuly Thrift non-login users.

Research and Define Business Requirement

Nuuly Thrift defines having a high number of registered users plays a key factor in the success of a thrifting marketplace. The more people register, the more users we have that can convert them.

We have identified a crucial goal — to implement a user-friendly and intuitive registration popup, aiming to encourage users to seamlessly sign up or log in to have an efficient onboarding experience within the Nuuly Thrift platform.

Research Methods:

Brainstorming Solutions

I start by dissecting challenges into smaller components, documenting four potential ideas on FigJam to attain the project goals.  The exploration narrow down into two main directions:

Guiding users to another page

Retaining them within the site

-> Both aiming to achieve the registration goal.

To gain deeper insights into the proposed solutions, I take an additional step by conducting a competitor analysis to see how competitors approach similar challenges and opportunities.

Why Popup Matters?

We all know popup can sometimes be perceived as annoying, yet it remains a compelling solution to communicate with users at strategic moments.

To balance the business goals and empathizing with user journey, I have taken steps to explore possible ways to enhance the popup experience. My goal is to transform popups into an intuitive solution rather than a disruptive experience.

Competitor Analysis:

How Our Competitors Do It?

The key takeaway from the competitor analysis involves categorizing website popups into three primary types: categorized by type (e.g., Yes/No, Gamified, Floating Bar), by goal (e.g., Survey, Registration, Product Recommendations), and by trigger (e.g., Exit Intent, Terms & Conditions, Inactivity Re-engagement). The analysis shows that an effective popup window can be characterized by its ability to answer three fundamental questions:

What is the goal it seeks to achieve?
What triggers its appearance?
And who is the intended audience trigger for the popup?

This framework establishes a strategic and structured approach that help me designing an effective popup that optimize project goals of user registeration.

Team's Collaboration:

Choosing Clarity Over Complexity

Following numerous rounds of refinement, our team has determined that incorporating placeholder text for users to input their email may lead to a text-busy appearance, deviating from our minimalist design guidelines. Consequently, we have chosen an alternative solution, featuring two distinct buttons – secondary and primary. With this solution, we believe to communicate with user more directly with stronger visibility.

Design Process:

High-fidelity & Iterations

The design iteration focused on the removal of the secondary button. We believe that simplifying the user interface by eliminating the secondary button streamlines the decision-making process for users. This approach aims to reduce potential confusion between "Sign Up" and "Log In".

Evaluation:

Mentor Feedbacks

In the recent evaluation feedback, The decision to remove the secondary button received positive results in an increase of user registration.

Excitingly, I am thrilled to announce that the project is now live on Nuulythrift. If this is your first time accessing Nuuly Thrift, I invite you to experience my design firsthand by adding an item to your cart! Feel free to explore the Nuuly Thrift, discover unique items, and witness the thoughtful design choices throughout the platform.

More Than A Design Project...

Balancing Simplicity and Functionality:
I learned to identify the delicate balance point between simplicity and functionality. This learning has equipped me with the ability to simplify functionalities to maintain a design that is intuitive and straightforward.

Project Management:
I learned the importance of effectively managing timelines, tasks, and resources, which played a pivotal role in the project's success. I gained experience in explaining my design solutions to engineering and product managers.

Presentation Skills:
I leverage my presentation skills by presenting design documents and rationales to the UX team and product managers and reflect on feedbacks to adapt changes.
